Abstract:
Unexpected equivalents in the mood systems of Hungarian and Estonian
subordinate clauses
This article compares the Hungarian and Estonian imperative and
conditional in subordinate clauses. In these languages, these moods have
broad and sometimes overlapping functions, such as the expression of the
conjunctive functions by both the Hungarian imperative and Estonian
conditional.
After a survey of how the imperative Uussive) and conditional are
handled in modem Hungarian and Estonian grammars, a number of
Hungarian subordinate clauses containing either imperative or conditional
predicates are compared with their Estonian translation equivalents in order
to map their mutual relations.
The Estonian equivalents of the Hungarian imperative and conditional in
subordinate clauses show that the Hungarian imperative is acomplex
category with many functions for which Estonian has numerous different
forms of expression. By contrast, the Hungarian conditional is rather limited,
being mainly confined to expressing conditionality. As a result, most
Estonian translations of the Hungarian conditional in subordinate clauses use
the same mood.
