Abstract:
Language Attitudes of Slang by the Informants of New General Atlas of Hungarian Dialects The study analyzes language attitudes of slang in an extraordinary way: in the aspect of different aged villagers. Within the scope of the so called New General Atlas of Hungarian Dialects project (supported by the Hungarian Academy of Science) researchers interrogate a dialectical and a sociolinguistical questionnaire in 200 research point of the Hungarian speech area. As a member of the research group the present writer asked the informants some more questions for her own research of slang, e. g. “Do you always understand what youngsters say? Do you like this kind of talk?”Within more than one year I could finally collect 20 usable interviews that in one hand approved: the range of using slang is really not connected with age-groups nor area – it can be used by older villagers too, generally in a smaller compass of course. On the other hand the study modifies the mainly stereotypical ideas of what older people think of youngsters’ “modern” and “urban” language. Because their attitude is not definitely negative. Especially among informants who have a common and regular contact with youngsters (e. g. with their grandchildren) slang is much more accepted, understood and maybe picked up. The answers of the informants disproved the power of media that can transmit many words and expressions of slang: if they can’t ask anybody about the mention and function of these that they usually hear from the media, not all of them can invent it from the context then pick up to his own idiolect.
