Abstract:
Strategies of Conviction in the Talking of Men and Women
Speech is one of the most important tools helping people to inform, to deliver information. Oration is a conscious and carefully planned text; the aim of the rhetor is to catch the attention and win the benevolence of the listener and convince him or her of the rhetor’s authenticity. The aim of our research – based on the universal functions of the suprasegments - is to examine how the rhetor uses the prosodic instruments and which strategies of conviction he or she applies. In this research the orations of five men and five women were employed. The records were analyzed with the PRAAT software, marking the speech sessions, measuring the durations of pauses, calculating temporal values, and examining the intonation and accentuation of certain utterances. On the base of these data we made an inquiry into the possibility of defining the prosodic markings of certain rhetoric configurations using phonetic parameters, and if there is a difference in applying strategies of conviction by men and women.
