Abstract:
Conceptual Metaphors and/or Mental Spaces? Applying the Cognitive Poetics framework in Analysis of Poetic Lyrics: András Lovasi Menetszél
The goal of this paper is to compare two methods of cognitive analysis and interpretation of poetic texts. For analysis I have chosen the modern poetic lyrics Menetszél by Lovasi András. The first method, proposed by LAKOFF and TURNER (1989) claims that poetic thought extends, elaborates, and composes conventionalized metaphors, asking questions about them. The basis of the second method is the conceptual integration theory proposed and developed mainly by FAUCONNIER and TURNER (2001, 2002, 2008). In this paper, the lyrics of Menetszél are analyzed using both frameworks. It turns out that in it is almost impossible to distinguish between the elaboration and composing in the text itself, and it is not useful in its interpretation. The conceptual integration framework with its main aspects (emergent structure and online processing) has more advantages and is flexible enough to analyze poetic texts appropriately.
