Abstract:
This paper begins with the difficulties of the Bible translation. I think NIDA’s functional equivalence is the most efficient theory in this ground. My analysis is based on the early Hungarian Bible translations from the 16th and 17th century. One of the purposes was to seek out the differences and similarities between the different denominational translations. In principle the primeval languages (Latin, Greek and above all the Hebrew) determine the issue, but many times the tradition is also relevant, like in the case with the valley of the shadow of death’s translation.
