Abstract:

Diplomamunkám során a poliakrialsav-dodeciltrimetilammónium bromid (PAA-DTAB)
rendszer tulajdonságait vizsgáltam többértékű só jelenlétében. A polielektrolit-tenzid elegyeket
állandó ionerősségű, de NaCl-ot és CaCl2-ot változó arányban tartalmazó oldatok keverésével
állítottam elő. Vizsgáltam az így keletkező polielektrolit-tenzid komplexek elektroforetikus
tulajdonságait és a rendszer fázisviselkedését.
Megmutattam, hogy míg az inert elektrolitként viselkedő NaCl a keletkező aggregátumok
stabilitásának csökkentésén keresztül befolyásolja a PAA-DTAB rendszer viselkedését, addig
a Ca-ionok specifikusan kötődnek a PAA-hoz. A Ca-ionok és a PAA specifikus kölcsönhatása
jelentősen módosítja a PAA-DTAB kölcsönhatást. Mind a sztöchiometrikus tenzidkötésre
jellemző tenzidkoncentrációnál kisebb, mind az annál nagyobb tenzidkoncentráció
tartományokban jelentősen változik a kölcsönhatás jellege, de a sztöchimetrikus kötésnek
megfelelő DTAB koncentrációnál nincs számottevő hatása a Ca-ionok jelenlétének.
További munkám célja annak vizsgálata lesz, hogy a Ca és tenzid ionok kötödése mennyire
tekinthető egyensúlyi folyamatnak az asszociatív fázisszeparációt megelőző “egyfázisú”
tartományokban, illetve hogyan befolyásolja a kötött ionok cseréjének dinamikáját a közeg inert
elektrolittal beállított ionerőssége.

Abstract:

During my thesis work I investigated the effect of multivalent counterions on the interaction of an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte and surfactant. Throughout my work I used sodium polyacrylate (PAA) as the polyelectrolyte and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) as surfactant. All measurements were done at constant 100ppm PAA concentration and the surfactant concentration was varied between 0 and 30 mM. Most of the measurements were made at 20 mM ionic strength. To investigate the effect of the multivalent Ca ions on the PAA/DTAB interaction, three different CaCl2 concentrations were used while the ionic strength was maintained at 20 mM by the addition of the necessary amount of NaCl. The electrophoretic mobility of the formed polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes and the phase behavior of mixtures were investigated. I could show that while the presence of an inert electrolyte (NaCl) affected the properties of the PAA-DTAB system mostly through suppressing the colloid stability of the polyelectrolytesurfactant aggregates, the Ca-ions show specific binding to PAA. The specific interaction of Ca-ions and PAA has a profound effect on the PAA-DTAB interaction. Both at lower or higher surfactants concentrations the presence of Ca-ions suppress the surfactant binding. However, in the DTAB concentration range of stoichiometric binding the presence of the Ca-ions does not have a significant effect on the PAA-DTAB interaction. We rationalized this observation in terms of structural changes of the PAA-Ca-DTAB aggregates. My plan for the future is to investigate if the PAA-DTAB system can preserve its equilibrium character in the dilute “one phase“ region in the presence of Ca-ions and how the dynamics of the system is affected by the ionic strength of the system, which can be tuned by an inert electrolyte.
