Abstract:
The paper investigates aspects of the most notorious criminal scandal in interwar Hungary. In the Tiszazug area which is roughly one hundred miles from the capital, Budapest, inhabitants of two villages killed their relatives, mostly husbands, but also old parents and children by giving them poisoned food. The murders remained unnoticed by the authorities over two decades. Among the victims we can identify disabled men who returned from the war, but due to serious injuries were unable to work for the household. The authors examine individual stories of such soldiers and also the heated reation of the wider society.
