Abstract:
The Estonian saama ´get´ and võima ´be allowed to´ versus the Finnish
saada ´get´ and voida ´be able to´.
The semantic analysis of the verbs in question pays special attention to those
senses that take different stems in the two languages. Theoretical frameworks
used are cognitive grammar and grammaticalisation. The results indicate that the
Estonian and Finnish languages display major differences in the expression of
the notions of perrnission and ability. Usage of the verbs is divided as follows:
Function Estonian Finnish
PROHIBITION Ei või Ei saa
Asking of PERMISSION Kas ma võin Saanko
ABILITY saan voin
