Abstract:
Perception of Differences in Regional Language Usage
The present study discusses problems related to applied dialectology and sociolinguistics, specifically that of vernacular linguistic usage and that of the linguistic/dialectal consciousness and linguistic sensitivity of students leaving in a dialectical environment.
The results of our empirical study show that Hungarian pupils leaving in Szekler land have a strong linguistic sensitivity. Although only a limited number of the high school students participating in our study were able to denominate with technical terms the recognized phenomena, generally it was observed that they perceive correctly the differences between their dialect and the (regional) colloquial Hungarian language. From the recognized/or unnoticed dialectical peculiarities of the pupils we can deduce those phenomena which are fading away or are just becoming parts of the regional vernacular.
