There were a lot of surveys regarding writing skills of teenagers (BARANYAI–LÉNÁRT 1959, OROSZ 1972, KERNYA 1988, KÁDÁRNÉ FÜLÖP 1990) or adults (HORVÁTH 1998) in Hungary. Writing an argumentative essay is considered to be the most difficult task for the participants. It is instructive to study the role that education plays in this problem. This paper focuses on an experiment designed to foster the development of argumentative skills by teaching the types of arguments. To overcome the difficulties of the task, the experiment used scaffolding, which appears to be an effective training ground for internalization of theoretical knowledge. With this method, teachers can ensure that their students should gather enough background information in quality argumentation. Developing effective persuasive writing skills during high school would be useful in many areas both in college and everyday life.
