A Pragmatic Investigation of Proverbs Proverbs are always short, simple sentences. They can be read in collection works or can be used in everyday conversations. Identifying the context type and understanding the meaning requires varying cognitive efforts from the mind. The proverb user and the receipient are both members of the same community, the common moral value of which is presented in the meaning of the proverb. The study explains the use of proverbs in relation to moral values and standpoints. Significance is attributed to intertexuality and to the explicit occurences of conscientiousness of the individual. The author thinks that functional cognitive linguistics approach is important for studying the use of proverbs.
