Abstract:
This article gives a survey of the most important studies in the Ukrainian historiography of
2000–2020 dedicated to Kyivan Rus. The survey is preceded by a brief analysis of the political
and intellectual context in which the scholars conducted their research. The main text is divided
into sections according to the spheres of the studies. These are: the history of Early Rus; Old
Ruthenian historiography; the social and religious history of Rus; the Galician-Volhynian lands
and Volhynian historiography in the 13th century; and construction of the memory of Kyivan Rus
in the Late Medieval, Early Modern and Modern Ukrainian and Russian traditions. Emphasis is
placed on ground-breaking books and articles which significantly change our understanding of
the sources and may serve as a foundation for the reshaping of the historical narrative about
eastern Europe in the (Early) Middle Ages. It is concluded that during the first two decades of
the third millennium, study of Old Rus in Ukraine became a solid and innovative discipline.
