Abstract:
The present study discusses the equivalent motifs and structures in Dostoevsky’s The Double using a term by Wolf Schmid. The concept of ’equivalence’ in the interpretation of Schmid means „equality of two elements based on a certain value” and also comprises both similarity and opposition. The first part of the essay focuses on the formal equivalences and divides the novel into three parts, which demonstrates the parallelism between the first and the third parts, reveals the correspondences among the chapters of the second part, and emphasizes the function of the mirror of the seventh chapter in the equivalent structure of the novel. The second part of the essay deals with the thematic equivalences, which also divides the novel into three parts based on the new aspect of the stages of gemination. This section illustrates the thematic elements and their changes in the course of the duplication. Later, it touches on important motifs, gaze and perspective of the work, the semantics of the name, and the distinctive attributes of the senior and the junior Golyadkin. In the process of the research it is being proved that Dostoevsky exemplifies the rupture of the protagonist, through both the representation of the character and the structure of the writing, and that is the equivalency of the chapters.
