The present article gives a review of the Ural Historical Journal (Ural'skii istoricheskii vestnik - UIV), the scholarly base of which was provided by the Institute of History and Archeology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Vestnik is a peer-reviewed academic periodical, registered in Scopus and ERIH Plus databases, all articles are subject to double blind peer review. In the overall Science Index rating for 2019 the periodical took 128th place in Russia, while in the rating on the topic “History. Historical sciences" it was ranked second. For a few years following its inception (1994) the journal was published in a single volume per year, later it came out with 2-3 thematic issues. From 2007 onwards, it underwent a remarkable renewal and now it is issued on a regular quarterly basis. Each issue of the journal contains a main conceptual topic. At the Institute a creative research team was formed under the leadership of Academic V.V. Alekseev who deals mainly with the issues of Russian modernization, and as the first editor-in-chief he shaped the scientific work of the Ural Historical Journal until 2013. Under the leadership of the next editor-in-chief, A.V. Golovnev, head of a series of ethnological and interdisciplinary projects at the Institute, the Vestnik also publishes articles dealing with the scientific results of local expeditions as well as ethnographic and archeologic research. In the forefront of the scientific interest of the current editor-in-chief, I.V. Poberezhnikov, stand mainly theoretical and methodological issues.hu_HU
