Abstract:
As decided by the Berlin Congress (1878), Austria-Hungary received the right to occupy two Ottoman provinces in the Balkans, Bosnia and Herzegovina. In summer 1908, the outbreak of the Young Turk Revolution brought the possibility of full restorian of Ottoman sovereignty over these provinces. This was the main reason for the decision of Vienna to annex the provinces. The proclamation of the annexation (6th October 1908) caused a dangerous international crisis. Serbia raised claims for territorial compensations, although, Belgrade had no right to place such demands. Russia could not support Serbia effectivly (defeat with Japan and revolution - 1905-1907). But Germany supported decisively Austria-Hungary that led to a diplomatic victory of Vienna. However, this result was a Pyrrhic victory of the Habsburg monarchy, because the relations between Vienna and Russia irreparably damaged.
