Abstract:
A rural retailer started to work with vegetables and fruits after the revolution of 1956, in the western countryside of Hungary. The literature about this period particularly overemphasizes the repressive function of state power, although the crimes of that time did not match with the expectations based on earlier, political crime focused researches. The retailer had a shop, where he formally sold the acquired products. According to the accusation the retailer bought much more vegatables and fruits then what he could sold out in his shop. Due to the investigation it was revealed that the retailer informally bought more fruits and vegetables, which he gave further at a wholesale level to working kitchens of state-owned companies and state councils. In this manner this rural retailer paid off the members of newly established co-operatives, and provided the raw material for the public kitchens.
