The term gender has been in use since the second half of the 19th century and has been the subject of a growing number of disciplines and research projects. In my study, I seek to answer the question of whether there are attempts to use gender-neutral language in Russian and, if so, what form(s) these take. The research focuses on personal pronouns and past tense verbs, as this is one of the forms in which grammatical gender appears in Russian. I conducted an online questionnaire among native Russian-speaking translators and interpreters to assess what translation solutions exist in Russian between different sentences considered gender-neutral in terms of grammatical gender. My analysis is based on four languages (English, Hungarian, German and Swedish) where verbs do not change based on grammatical gender and where there is a personal pronoun that does not explicitly specify gender. Results indicate that translators are likely to give a gender-specific translation when the source text is paired with a picture of a person. Translators chose the target language pronoun and verb form that they considered to be good and appropriate based on the appearance of the people in the pictures.
