Abstract:
Romanian expressions in the Hungarian daily papers of
Transylvania in the mid-war period
The paper discusses some general questions connected to the sociolinguistical aspects of the Hungarian daily papers in Romania between the two World Wars (from 1920 to 1940). Being a very important period in the life of the discussed daily press (due to the strong Romanian censorship of the press), a special question of the subject is the appearance of Romanian linguistical elements in these papers. The collected material being now worked up (two papers a month, from every second or third year) of two daily papers of the period (Brassói Lapok published in Brassó and Keleti Újság published in Kolozsvár) contains mainly Romanian place-names (names of settlements and public places), followed by names of official institutions, texts of advertisements, texts of official announcements and orders, names of jobs and other common nouns. The formation of these phenomena changes according to different phases of the period, to genre and linguistic context. The analysis of this question can bring us closer to the development of research methods of codeswitching in written language, especially in press-language.
