Abstract:
Cognitive Linguistics and Second Language Instruction: Usage-based Grammars and Teaching the Hungarian Moods to Foreigners
This paper discusses the possible contributions of cognitive linguistics to second language instruction and L2 curriculum design. Based on theories of usage-based and network models of grammar the paper presents the results of an empirical investigation (carried out on the Hungarian National Corpus) on the type and token frequency in the Hungarian mood paradigms. Beyond the theoretical approach it also examines the possibilities of the integration of the data on frequency in L2 curriculum design and offers some methods that could make more efficient the teaching of the Hungarian moods to foreigners.
