Abstract:
Latin and German Models in Anatomical Name Creation of Pál Bugát
The present article deals with term-formation processes in Hungary during the language reform
movement in the early nineteenth century. At that time Latin was used as the language of science and
education. The first handbook of anatomy which was intended to be used in the training of surgeons
was translated from German into Hungarian by PÁL BUGÁT in 1828. He was confronted with a special
difficulty: as Hungarian scientific language was lacking scientific vocabulary, he had to create new
terms for anatomical names. A frequently applied method of term-creation is the use of linguistic
calques. The paper attempts to give an answer to the question whether Latin or German served as a
model in the calques of BUGÁT. After a thorough analysis of his anatomical names and comparison
with the ones in the original German text we can establish that in the majority of the cases BUGÁT relied
on Latin.
