Abstract:
Linguistic and social motivation of usage and formation of the Hungarian
slang nowadays
The study offers a brief survey of the formation and judgement of the Hungarian slang until
now. The first part of the paper presents many linguistic and social causes of using slang for example
the desire for excelling, to strengthen the cohesion in the group and to be distinguished from other
groups. Just because of its conspicious and uncommon character, a word or an expression in slang can
easily turn into common then a linguistic trend, however this process contrasts with the original functions
of slang. By this time the usage of slang became so frequent and accepted that only such sociolinguistic
factors can make an end of it like usage appropriation, linguistic judgement and linguistic attitude.
In connection with its frequency a problem comes up: are young people as the main users of
slang able to switch between slang and standard? Is standard vocabulary still so active in their mental
lexicon that it doesn’t have a negative effect on their communication because of the mentioned sociolinguistic
factors? According to the examples quoted in the study our answer must be: not sure.
