The interaction of pragmatics and grammar in Old and Middie Hungarian When conducting research on historicai syntax, it seems evident that certain linguistic categories can be cod ed in different ways, and the possibility and number of variants depend on the relationship between the given linguistic category and the grammatical system. Regarding syntax, the choice between the possible variants is in the majority of cases determined by pragmatic factors. In historicai research, one possible manifestation of a bundle of pragmatic features is the text type itself, which may show preference for certain syntactic variants, and hence these variants appear in a given text type relatively frequently. On the other hand, language use can also trigger syntactic changes, which may lead to the emergence of further variants, providing evidence for the integration oflanguage use and grammar.
