Abstract:
Terminological Problems of Bilingual (Hungarian–Slovak, Slovak–Hungarian) Architectural Dictionary and Textbooks’ Dictionaries
The idea of writing an essay dealing with examining a bilingual dictionary of architecture and textbooks’ dictionaries came after studying a similar paper of Ms KATALINMISAD. My essay first gives a short summary of the problems of Hungarian textbooks in Slovakia, then explains some formal char-acteristics of Hungarian and Slovak terms. Is also presents the structure of dictionary and textbooks’ dictionaries and examines them. Examining dictionary and textbooks’ dictionaries some differences, inaccuracies and mistakes can be observed: 1) Examples given in textbooks and dictionary printed in Hungary and Slovakia are different, so the terminology differs from the Hungarian standard. 2) There are differences even in Hungarian examples given in Slovakia: there is discrepancy not only between the usage of terms in dictionaries, textbooks’ dictionaries and Hungarian standard, but in the terminol-ogy itself used in Slovakia. 3) Among the examined material there occurred some expressions that were different from the standard in style, and lexicological regionalism. 4) The usage of terms in the dictionary is not consequent. The results of this survey also reinforce the necessity of language plan-ning in Slovakia: the codification of terminology, its unification, producing bilingual dictionaries and bilingual collections of terminology and Hungarian textbooks of proper quality.
