Abstract:
VALÉRIA TÓTH, Reflections on settlement-name correlations
The name adopting/name changing situation in which an existing settlement name, for various
reasons, is secondarily extended with a distinctive addition, although already commented on several times
in Hungarian and international onomastic literature, received a monographic discussion (A magyar
településnevek korrelációs rendszerének alakulása a természetes névadás korszakában [‘The correlational
system of Hungarian settlement names in the period of non-official place-naming practices’]; Budapest)
only in 2010. The book, by ANDREA BÖLCSKEI, undertaking the wide range analysis of settlement-
name correlations as well as the survey of the name users’ spatial orientation, primarily adopts a
cognitive linguistic approach.
This paper outlines my reflections, formulated whilst reading the book, on the linguistic features
of the settlement-name correlations; on the settlement-historical and onomasociological factors behind
the observed phenomenon. I suggest here that the system of non-official settlement-name correlations
was in fact developed as a result of two distinct (settlement-) historical processes, and that these
processes resulted in rather different linguistic features. In close connection, I also discuss how other
(mainly historical, socioonomastic, sociopragmatic) considerations, in addition to a cognitive linguistic
approach, could improve our current knowledge on settlement-name correlations.
