Abstract:
Este trabajo tiene como finalidad la identificación de los rasgos y matices
asociados a la imagen de España en la antología de cuentos titulada Vidas sombrías. En
la obra, la dura crítica que el autor realiza de la sociedad de su tiempo y de la
idiosincrasia del español obedece a factores generacionales e individuales: para Baroja,
el paisaje es parte integrante de la constitución moral y social de la vida española y un
elemento más del drama nacional. Por eso, España no constituye un puro y simple
escenario estático sino más bien un organismo dotado de energías que empuja al
hombre a vivir en lucha constante con el ambiente que lo rodea. El interés del escritor
por el paisaje de las diferentes regiones de la península se mezcla entonces con el
análisis psicológico de las personas que lo habitan. Los dos temas aparecerán en muchas
de las ficciones novelescas barojianas.
Abstract:
This paper has the aim of identifying the features and characteristics of
the image of Spain as seen in the short stories anthology Vidas sombrías. In this work
the strong criticism the author gives of contemporary society and of Spanish
idiosyncrasies depends both on generational and individual reasons: according to
Baroja, landscape is a basic part of Spanish moral and social life, and adds yet another
feature to the drama of the nation. For this reason, Spain does not form a mere static
scene but on the contrary, a living organism that induces men to live in a constant fight
with their environment. For this reason the author’s focus on Spanish landscape and
regions is widened by a psychological analysis of the characters. The two themes will
later appear in most of the fictions written by Pío Baroja.
