Abstract:
This article will analyze Mexican writer Brianda Domecq’s submission to the project
De cuerpo entero (1990-1993). Specifically, I will analyze how Domecq’s autobiographical piece
establishes an “complicit pact” with the reader in the ways in which she uses the parody of the
picaresque in a narrative centered in her personal life, before her public life as an author. In this
narrative, Domecq’s relationships, bodily experiences, and breaking with gender expectations are
decisive. In addition, she includes elements that disrupt the assumption of a mestizo Mexican
identity (the mix of indigenous and Spanish) since she is the daughter of an Andalusian father
and an American mother, who emigrates and establishes herself in Mexico.
