Abstract:
Based on a large corpus of contemporary novels and short stories, this paperoffers a cultural critique of Spanish American autofiction, dividing it into four interconnected zones going beyondnational boundaries. We identify an autofiction that seeks to distinguish itself from realism, another that fills the empty space left by the disrepute the testimony has fallen into, an autofiction marked by the loss of prestige and/or the criminalizationof the authorial figure, and finally, one that is mainly characterizedby its deconstruction of all kinds of identitary essentialisms.
